UPCOUNTRY OUTREACH FOR DEVELOPMENT
The idea of forming this organization was developed in 2020 by a Ugandan University graduate by the name of Nabalema Gloria Florence. This was after an incident in Kabarungi village where an old lady of 84 years had 9 grandchildren. She had amnesia, she would forget even the simple events that had just occurred minutes ago, and she felt a general body weakness. Her health state alone made it difficult to take care of her grandchildren and herself. These children had been abandoned by their mothers because one had given birth at 16 yrs and another was a prostitute. Their father was a drug addict who did not care at all. Observing the extended family, the grandmother needed immediate health attention, and the child's mother and the prostitute required guidance on how to upbringing the children and accept their responsibilities. The father needed to be taken for rehabilitation and the children’s future was secured. The fact that these girls gave birth at tender age caught my attention since the grandmother was unable to take care of these grandchildren. In the community, it was not only these girls that gave birth at tender age but there were many victims of early pregnancies since many girls were exposed to violence and sexual abuse due to poverty and they contracted STDS. All this geared Gloria's urge to startup an organization to curb the challenges the adolescents face in the community thus the birth of Upcountry Outreach for development.
